Portable power stations are essentially a lithium battery, an inverter, and some charge controllers in a plastic box with a handle. They are great for camping, mobile work, and emergency backup. They are not a substitute for a rooftop solar system.

The use cases are different. A portable unit charges from the wall or from a portable panel. It runs a few devices for a few hours. A full solar system is wired into the home or business and runs indefinitely. Buyers who ask for a "small solar system" often mean the portable one; buyers who ask for a "solar installation" mean the wired one. We sell both, but the right answer is usually either-or, not both.

Pricing is different. A 1 kWh portable unit costs about the same as a 2 kWh wired battery at wholesale. The portable unit has higher per-kWh cost because you are paying for the inverter, the BMS, and the box. The wired battery is just the battery.

What we see in our markets: portable units sell well into the diaspora community for sending home to relatives, into small retailers for phone-charging businesses, and into specific verticals like film production and outdoor events. Wired systems sell to anyone who wants to actually replace or supplement grid power.

If you are sourcing for the African market, both have a place. Just do not confuse your buyer by offering a portable unit as a "home solar system." It is not, and the warranty will not cover that use case.
